Product Description
Jimmie Johnson started from the pole and went on to win his first Prelude to the Dream on Wednesday night at Eldora Speedway. The annual charity event organized by Tony Stewart brought together some of the biggest stars in NASCAR and across auto racing to compete in late model stock cars on the half-mile dirt track.
Johnson led all 30 laps and held off his car owner Clint Bowyer by .638 of a second in the end to add another big win to his impressive resume. It also marked his first win on dirt since he won running off-road and stadium trucks early in his career. "This is big," said Johnson, who qualified fourth and finished third in the first heat earlier in the night. "This is so much fun. It's such a challenge to drive these cars and to come out and race against these guys. I can't believe it."
This year's race included a team concept with the top finishes on each team added up for an overall squad winner - with proceeds going to four of the nation’s top children’s hospitals. Johnson's win helped give Team Levine - which consisted of Kyle Busch (captain), Johnson, Matt Kenseth, David Reutimann, Dave Blaney, Marcos Ambrose and Travis Pastrana - 45 percent of net money raised.
"I can't thank Tony (Stewart) enough for putting this on each year," Johnson said. "The Levine's Hospital is going to get a bunch of money."
Bowyer, 2007 winner Carl Edwards (started 17th), Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin (started 24th) rounded out the top five. Stewart, Dave Blaney, Kasey Kahne, Ken Schrader and Bill Elliott completed the first ten finishers.
Bowyer opened the night by topping qualifying with a lap of 16.076 seconds. The field was then split into three heat races with Kasey Kahne, Ryan Newman and Kyle Busch taking checkered flags. When the feature field rolled off Kahne was forced to a back-up car after losing the engine in his primary mount and Stewart opted to start last in the 27th position in the field in hopes of earning a special bonus of $50,000.
Many of the late models featured sponsors from the cars each driver races in their respective series. Johnson's car was sponsored by Lowe's and it carried a special Father's Day paint scheme that had 480 names of Dad's on it, including his father - Gary Johnson.
